News & Notes

November 25, 2024

ABO attended Academy 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana with a booth in the exhibit hall and several days of meetings. Staff and leadership had an opportunity to meet with the American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) to announce our new Student Candidate program, as well as the American Optometric Association (AOA) and the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO). It was a great four days of interacting with profession leaders, Diplomates and potential Candidates.

Missed the November 20th webinar? It’s now online! Deepa Chandrasekaran, OD, presented an excellent course on Medical Use of Contact Lenses. This is a great refresher for our current Contact Lens CAP assessment! Dr. Chandrasekaran is an ABO Diplomate and one of six optometrists in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the Vanderbilt Eye Institute, where she practices in the Adult Comprehensive/Contact Lenses Clinic. Check out the online version and receive 2 COPE-accredited CE hours after passing the short post-course quiz. Stay tuned for information on our winter webinar in early 2025. We are finalizing the date with our speaker and will post it to social media soon!

Congratulations to ABO Diplomate Dr. Shelly Kim who earned the distinction of Diplomate in the Comprehensive Eye Care section of the American Academy of Optometry. She was one of 16 new AAO Diplomates announced at last week’s meeting in Indianapolis. Dr. Kim practices at Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in Chicago, Illinois where she is also the residency program coordinator.

The Clinical and Refractive Optometry Journal (CROJ) is generously offering an exclusive discount to ABO’s Diplomates and Active Candidates through June 30, 2025. Assistance needed with research survey! Early assessment or even prevention of burnout is needed to assure the well-being of the optometric community and quality patient care. Healthcare providers have a higher risk of burnout, and optometrists are not immune.

For his PhD dissertation, Jeffrey L. Weaver, OD, is undertaking a survey of optometrists related to burnout. This anonymous survey takes 15 minutes. Please consider participating. We think you may find the experience interesting and meaningful. Link to Survey HERE

Does your employer require board certification? If you work for a private practice or healthcare organization that requires board certification for optometrists, we would like to hear from you. Please contact the ABO office at 314.983.4226 or [email protected] to take a brief survey and earn 2 Category 2 CE points.
