Why Become a Student Candidate

Participation in ABO's Student Candidate Program is an impressive accomplishment to add to your CV. It is also an excellent way to demonstrate your commitment to continued learning while practicing your clinical decision making skills.

Benefits of Becoming a Student Candidate

Diplomate status in the American Board of Optometry is a highly valued credential. As a Student Candidate, you will have access to many of the same resources and opportunities Diplomates have and will complete a series of learning modules designed to enhance your clinical aptitude and support study efforts for your final licensing board exams.

  • Student candidates can earn up to 30 CE points toward the 150 points required to take the board certification exam, while still a student.
  • Students will complete a series of clinically based learning modules that may aid in preparation for Part II and Part III of licensing boards.
  • Students will have access to ABO’s quarterly webinar series and all reference and learning materials.
  • Student applicants pay a $25 application fee which is a $275 discount off the standard application fee.
  • Students will have access to a network of successful, accomplished, board certified optometrists through our school and state ambassador program.

After Becoming a Licensed Optometrist

Upon graduation from an ACOE accredited school, completion of all student candidate program requirements, and obtaining a license to practice in a US state, territory or Canadian Province, student candidates will be advanced to Active Candidate/Board Eligible status. Active candidates can earn and submit the remainder of the required 150 qualifying points for approval to sit for the board certification exam.
