What's New ABO

Congratulations to our many Diplomates who were honored at Optometry’s Meeting in Washington, DC. Dr. Joseph Shovlin, a Diplomate since 2012, was inducted into the AOA’s Hall of Fame for his longstanding contributions to the optometric profession. Dr. Andrea Thau, a Diplomate and former AOA board president received the Dr. W. David Sullins Jr. InfantSEE® Award for her outstanding public service with the InfantSEE® program. A Diplomate since ABO’s inception, Dr. George Veliky was honored with the Optometric Educator of the Year Award for service on behalf of the profession, optometric education and to the visual welfare of the public. And rounding out the honorees, Dr. Amy Puerto received the Young Optometrist of the Year Award, recognizing her remarkable leadership skills when serving the profession, patients, and the community.

Did you miss our June 6 webinar Making Grand Rounds Grand Again?  Drs. Jeffrey Varanelli and Nicholas Colatrella presented a fantastic lecture attended by over 300 of our ABO Diplomates. The recorded version is now available on the ABO website and can be accessed by logging into your dashboard. Save the date now for our fall webinar, Pediatrics Made Easy: Tips for Pediatric Eye Exams and Prescribing, presented by Jenelle Mallios, OD and scheduled for Wednesday, November 8 from 7:00 – 9:00 PM CST.

ABO is launching new social media sites! If you currently follow our ABO Facebook page, we invite you to follow our new page, launching in late July. The old page will be deactivated at the beginning of August. With evolving social media standards and guidelines, our new page will consolidate several old sources and allow staff to use the management tools more effectively to bring important content to Diplomates and other followers. ABO will also launch an Instagram account and update our current LinkedIn page. Be sure to follow and like our pages to stay up to date with new information and important deadlines!

Do you have an opportunity to speak to colleagues about Board Certification? Often, optometrists curious about board certification may reach out to a colleague who is a known Diplomate before contacting ABO directly. We often get requests for literature or resources that potential candidates may be directed to. We are excited to have two new videos available that can help colleagues, employers or the public better understand board certification as well as our new CAQ program. Check out the videos here and be sure to pass them on for all who are interested! Board Certification Video   CAQ Video

Does your employer require board certification? If you work for a private practice or healthcare organization that requires board certification for optometrists, we would like to hear from you. Please contact the ABO office at 314.983.4226 or [email protected] to take a brief survey and earn 2 Category 2 CE points.
