A Word from Our Chair
Greetings! It is an honor to become the new chair of ABO. As an educator and practitioner, I greatly appreciate the importance and value of being a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry. ABO and those board certified represent a group of individuals who strive to elevate our profession to the highest degree.
At the June ABO annual board meeting, we welcomed two new board members, Dr. Mark Eltis from Toronto, Canada, and Dr. Bibin Cherian from Oklahoma. We also thanked Dr. Paul Hodge, who completed his term as immediate past chair and Dr. David Sterna who now serves as immediate past chair. We appreciate their dedication, time, and direction given to ABO over the years. And to all our board members, as well as Dr. Catherine Hines, Director of Education and Assessment and April Wilhelm, Executive Director, their insight, and quest to assure those board certified meet the highest level of standards is appreciated.
This past year we saw many benefits from the modifications made in the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) process and the Continuous Assessment Program (CAP). These enhancements, along with exceptional educational webinars, have allowed ABO to provide important avenues for continued development and access to information critical to all good clinicians. And our newest offering, the Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ), provides an added recognition and credential that can be pursued in focused areas.
In this upcoming year, the board will continue to strive to strengthen, improve and deliver a credential that is valued and respected among colleagues, the public and the greater healthcare community. As a healthcare provider, dedication to lifelong learning and improvement is essential to the care we provide our patients and is essential for our profession. I look forward to being a part of ABO, serving as its chair and upholding our dedication to providing the best for our patients, optometry, and healthcare.
