Staff Spotlight – Dr. Catherine Hines

May 3, 2017

ch photo 2Dr. Catherine Hines plays an integral role with ABO overseeing development of the board certification exam and elements of the MOC program. A graduate of New England College of Optometry, she completed a residency in Primary Care Optometry at Pennsylvania College of Optometry and then returned to NECO as a full-time faculty member where she taught students for over a decade. Dr. Hines continued working in optometric education as Director of Clinical Examinations at NBEO prior to joining ABO.

An advocate of lifelong learning, she has no doubt that optometrists who are board certified will significantly impact the future of the profession. “These individuals have demonstrated that they care about optometry and are committed to continuous learning and improvement, and that bodes well for the future of the profession,” said Dr. Hines.

Among her responsibilities with ABO, one of the things she enjoys the most is working with Diplomate volunteers. Whether through item writing, form review or SAM development, Dr. Hines is constantly inspired by the dedication and enthusiasm of optometrists who are so willing to serve the profession. She also enjoys overseeing one of ABO’s newest projects, a quarterly webinar series exclusively for Diplomates and Candidates.

When not guiding the educational efforts of ABO, Dr. Hines spends as much time as possible outside in nature. Living in Charlotte, North Carolina, she has been a volunteer at the Carolina Raptor Center for over 6 years and is working on her Master Naturalist and Environmental Educator certifications. She also cherishes time spent with family and friends and has a son and daughter, both in their mid-20’s, who live nearby and still enjoy spending time with their mother.
