Spotlight on New Directors

Meet the four new members of the ABO Board of Directors! Elected to the board on June 24, 2025, each director will serve a 3-year term representing various stakeholders.
Beverly Black joins the ABO board as a public member, representing interests outside of the optometric profession. Beverly holds a Master’s Degree in Health Services Administration from George Washington University and has over 25 years of experience working in non-profit, health-related associations and organizations. She is a Certified Association Executive (CAE), a mentor for the American Society of Association Executives, and is active with the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE). She has served on numerous certification, association and state regulatory boards, including a 2023 appointment to the South Carolina Board of Pharmacy by the governor of South Carolina. Asked to reflect on her career, Beverly said, “I literally fell into a non-profit management career. A project in grad school led me to a blind visit to a health-related association in Maryland. They offered me a position, and I worked there in two segments for over 30 years. It provided a career that was a perfect blend of my interests/education and created opportunities in local, state and national associations and professional certification.”
Kim Castleberry, OD, is the founder of Plano Eye Associates in Plano, TX and has been an ABO Diplomate since 2012. He joins the board as an at-large director, bringing years of experience in various professional leadership roles. Dr. Castleberry is a past president of the Texas Optometric Association and was named Texas Optometrist of the Year. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Houston College of Optometry and has been a frequent lecturer and author. As the founder of Plano Eye Associates, Dr. Castleberry has encouraged all ODs within the practice to obtain their board certification and now has one of the few practices in Texas where all optometrists are ABO Diplomates. Outside of his practice, he loves spending time with his grandkids, gardening, and traveling around the world. He has homes in Palm Springs and Newport Coast, CA, but remarkably, after 42 years of practice, he still loves optometry and has no plans to retire.
Kimberly Woideck, OD, is a graduate of Nova Southeastern University and has been an ABO Diplomate since 2022. She joins the ABO Board as an at-large director and is the first active-duty military optometrist to have a seat on the board. Dr. Woideck is a Major in the United States Air Force and was named the 2021 Air Force Biomedical Clinician of the Year, Company Grade Officer. She has served on remote training missions and currently serves on the board of the Association of Armed Forces and Federal Optometric Services (AFOS). Bringing a unique perspective to the board, Dr. Woideck has been in both private practice and federal service. As a Florida resident, she enjoys spending as much time as possible outdoors, whether taking advantage of all the local beaches or going for a long run with her dog, Doodle Bug.
Patti Phillips, PhD, also joins the board as a public member. She is the co-founder and CEO of ROI Institute, Inc., a US-based consulting firm that serves for-profit, not-for-profit, government, and non-governmental organizations in 70 countries as they build capability in measurement, evaluation, and analytics. She has extensive experience serving on accreditation panels, advisory boards, and boards of directors and is a published author and speaker. A recipient of the 2022 Association for Talent Development (ATD) Thought Leader Award, Patti also served on the Board of Trustees for the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) in Geneva, Switzerland.
