Congratulations to Diplomate Paul Barney who will be recognized by the American Optometric Association with the Optometrist of the Year Award for 2017. Dr. Barney is a graduate of Southern College of Optometry and currently serves as director of the Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute’s Co-Management and Surgery Center in Anchorage, Alaska. He has dedicated countless hours of volunteer time to the profession over the last 25 years and has been a strong advocate of ensuring optometrists are able to practice to the full extent of their training.
Congratulations also to Diplomate Angelique Sawyer who will be recognized by the American Optometric Association with the Young Optometrist of the Year Award for 2017. Dr. Sawyer graduated summa cum laude from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 2008, completed a residency in Ocular Disease and Primary Care and is in private practice in New Hampshire. She serves the profession as well as her community in many leadership and volunteer capacities including her current role as president of the NHOA.
Registration is open for the July 2017 board certification exam. If you are an Active Candidate and have not yet scheduled your exam, don’t put it off any longer. Register now! The more you can set yourself apart and demonstrate your knowledge, proficiency and skill, the more opportunity you will have for success. Becoming board certified and participating in maintenance of certification provides the distinguishing credential needed to show patients as well as employers and insurers that you are voluntarily taking extra steps to ensure continuous learning and improvement.
Looking for a great opportunity to earn live CE credit and network with colleagues? Optometry’s Meeting (OM), the premier event of the American Optometric Association, is right around the corner. Held in Washington D.C. from June 21 – 25, OM provides five days of engaging courses including evidence based case studies, joint OD-paraoptometric courses, hands-on workshops, poster sessions, CEE and evening courses. In addition to education, attendees have access to over 200 vendors and industry related organizations in the exhibit hall and exciting speakers and social events. Twelve-time Olympic medalist Dara Torres will speak at the Opening General Session and pop star Andy Grammer will perform at A Celebration of Optometry. MOC Reminder! Don’t get behind on maintaining your MOC requirements. Remember to do your annual module and enter all CE into your Learning Builder portal. And if this is the year you are doing a PPM, remember it could take 30-90 days complete. Allow yourself plenty of time!
