Get the Most Out of Your MOC: Turning Assessments into Actionable Learning

In the June issue of On Board, we discussed the structure of ABO’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program and how its components create a well-rounded approach to lifelong learning. If you missed it, check it out here. In this issue, we’re focusing on how you can maximize the educational value of your MOC by understanding how each piece of the puzzle fits together to support your professional growth.
At the heart of the MOC program are the CAP assessments. While they help ensure you’re staying current with changes in the profession, their true value goes deeper—they shine a light on the blind spots in your knowledge.
CAP Assessments: More Than Just a Test
When we surveyed Diplomates about their experience with the fundamental knowledge section of the assessments, roughly 25% said they were confident in their knowledge of the subject prior to the assessment but realized afterward that they need to improve or update their knowledge.
This is consistent with research in cognitive psychology which tells us we’re not always the best judges of what we don’t know. Tools like the CAP assessments are vital for identifying areas that need attention.
From Gaps to Growth: Using MOC Tools Strategically
Once those knowledge gaps are revealed, the other elements of the MOC program can be used strategically to help you close them.
ABO’s quarterly webinars are directly aligned with CAP assessment content. All webinars are recorded and available on the CE Courses page of our website and each session offers 2 hours of COPE-accredited CE. Even if you don’t need the CE credit, don’t skip the 20-question quiz, which is a valuable component of the educational experience. Research in adult-learning theory shows that an assessment component boosts both learning and long-term retention
You also have access to self-directed learning modules on your learning plan page in Learning Builder. These modules include a required reading followed by a short assessment, plus additional optional references to deepen your understanding. They’re flexible, focused, and usually take less than an hour to complete. Choose the modules that best correspond to your individual learning gaps.
Be Intentional with Your CE
One of the smartest ways to strengthen your knowledge is to let your CAP results guide your future learning. Instead of choosing CE courses based on convenience or habit, consider selecting content that directly addresses your weak spots. This targeted approach not only makes your CE more meaningful, but it also helps you stay sharp and well-prepared for the evolving demands of patient care.
ABO’s MOC program isn’t just about maintaining certification; it’s a powerful framework for ongoing, personalized learning. Use your CAP results as a roadmap for selecting future CE, take advantage of ABO’s webinars and modules, and maximize the value of your ABO board certification.
