Diplomate Spotlight – Sean Berensen, OD

May 21, 2024

In honor of Military Appreciation Month, ABO is highlighting one of our Diplomates who is an active duty military member, serving both our country and his patients. Sean Berensen, OD serves as a Major in the United States Air Force where he practices in the optometry clinic at 35th Medical Group in Misawa, Japan. He has been there for ten months. The clinic’s area of focus is to provide comprehensive eye care for the military community which consists of active duty, their dependents, and retirees of all ages. They also provide pre- and post-operative care for the military’s refractive surgery program.

He is the flight commander of the Human Performance flight, which entails leading and managing nine other people from various clinics to include optometry, physical therapy, and health promotions. He has received two Air Force Commendation Medals and three Meritorious Service Medals for outstanding service to the Air Force and country.

A 2012 graduate of the University of Houston College of Optometry, he decided to become a military optometrist because of the Health Profession Scholarship Program which pays for several years of optometry school.

Major Berensen pursued Board Certification to further his professional development and receive additional compensation as a board-certified optometrist. He says, “I feel board certification has helped optometry solidify itself as a profession that values professional development and continuing education. The CAP assessments have expanded my clinical knowledge and keep me at the forefront of current treatment options and ever-changing practice guidelines.”

His wife, Juliet, their two sons (ages 17 and 16), and two daughters (ages 12 and 5), enjoy one of the best perks of being in the military – traveling to new countries and experiencing cultures around the world. We thank Dr. Berensen for his service to our country, his dedication to the profession and his support of ABO board certification.

If you are currently serving in the military and are interested in board certification, please contact our office to learn more about the program and the incentives offered to military members.
