Diplomate Spotlight – Jaclyn Call, OD
After graduating from SUNY College of Optometry, Dr. Call completed a residency in primary care and ocular disease at East New York Diagnostic and Treatment Center, an NYC-run health care facility in Brooklyn.
A member of the National Association of VA Optometrists, Dr. Call currently holds an attending position at the East Orange VA Hospital in New Jersey, where she provides direct care to patients and indirect care through supervising residents. She previously worked at a community-based outpatient clinic, Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx.
In order to ensure she was practicing optometry at the highest level for herself, her patients, and the residents she teaches, Dr. Call became ABO-certified a few years after graduation.
Dr. Call feels that Board Certification has elevated the standard of care in optometry. She says, “By making certain that we are up to date on the current research in all areas of practice, it holds optometrists accountable for knowledge by requiring us to actively engage in the articles we read. Working as I do with a patient population with high levels of ocular disease, I have found the knowledge I have gained substantially helpful with their treatment.“
As an ABO volunteer, Dr. Call has researched focused materials for CAP assessments and participated in item development for the board certification exam. She enjoys diving deep into individual optometry topics. Volunteering with ABO has allowed her to do this in a purposeful manner.
Dr. Call and her husband, James, have two tremendously creative daughters, Camille and Maggie, who share a great sense of humor. They are a family of animal lovers who have two cats and enjoy backyard birding and feeding the assorted animals who visit their backyard. On a nice day you may run into her on a nature hike exploring the beautiful trails in New Jersey.
Thank you to Dr. Call for her commitment to providing her patients the highest quality care, her advocacy for board certification and lifelong learning and the impact she makes through volunteering her time and expertise with ABO.
