Diplomate Spotlight – Dr. Marty Carroll

Dr. Carroll has an enthusiasm for optometry that is infectious. In practice for over 35 years, not only has he seen many changes in the profession, but he has also played a role in some of those changes. Dr. Carroll works in a maximum scope medical and contact lens based private practice with four other talented doctors and an incredibly supportive staff. They have two, soon to be three, clinic locations and are dedicated to providing the highest quality care and patient centered services. Dr. Carroll and his colleagues see all ages and types of patients, are on call 24/7 and have hospital privileges that allow greater access to patients when needed.

A strong supporter of the ABO, Dr. Carroll was among the first group of optometrists to become a Diplomate. He believes that board certification and maintenance of certification have made him a better doctor, which is something both he and his patients have benefited from. When asked about his commitment to ABO, Dr. Carroll stated “for me, board certification indicates to patients, other providers and the insurance industry that a doctor is highly qualified in the medical field in which they practice and I want to be a part of this message. Because of tireless work by the giants in optometry like Dr. Lou Catania and many others, we are now a recognized medical profession and integral part of the US Health Care System.  Board Certification is a natural outcome of our acceptance and alignment with this system. Since the beginning of Optometric Board Certification I have been a proponent as other medical disciplines become aligned with us.  Like becoming a Fellow and Diplomate in the American Academy of Optometry and Maintaining AAO Fellowship, being Board Certified and Maintaining Certification gives the public assurance that their doctor is voluntarily being held to the highest standards in the specialty of optometry.”

As an advocate for ABO, Dr. Carroll has volunteered on numerous committees including item writing, standard setting and form review. He appreciates the exceptional people he has gotten to work with on these committees and found the experiences very rewarding. His list of volunteer activities outside of ABO is just as notable. Throughout his 35 year career Dr. Carroll has taken the time to participate in community health fairs and clinics, Head Start vision screenings and advisory committees, local school vision programs, Sight for Students, Vision USA, InfantSee, youth mentoring programs and student athlete vision screenings. He has also served as a ring physician for boxing and MMA matches for over 10 years, been honored as a commencement speaker, served as a COPE reviewer and a clinical skills reviewer for NBEO, and served on numerous boards including the Wyoming Board of Examiners in Optometry, the Wyoming Optometric Association, the Needs Incorporated Food Bank, ARBO and the Stride Learning Center.

For all of his volunteer efforts and support of both community and professional events, Dr. Carroll has earned the Optometric Recognition award, been named a Distinguished Alumnus of both Laramie County Community College and Southern California College of Optometry, received a Teaching Excellence award from the University of Wyoming Family and Rural Medicine MD/DO Residency Program, and was named Optometrist of the Year by the Wyoming Optometric Association.

When not caring for patients or supporting all of the wonderful organizations and events he has become passionate about, Dr. Carroll enjoys spending time with his wife, their two grown daughters and extended family and friends. He likes to travel, embark on entrepreneurial endeavors and cheer on his beloved Wyoming Cowboys and Denver Broncos.
