Diplomate Spotlight – Dr. Amanda Hoelscher
The American Board of Optometry wouldn’t be what it is today without the dedication and commitment of our many volunteers. Dr. Amanda Hoelscher is one of those volunteers. A graduate of the University of Houston College of Optometry, Dr. Hoelscher completed externships in Denver, Colorado and Dallas, Texas. During her time in Dallas, she found her passion for providing cataract and refractive care for patients.
In 2014, Dr. Hoelscher passed her board certification exam to become a Diplomate. Her desire to stand out to patients as a doctor committed to being current in their treatment and care was strongly supported by her employer. “Board certification elevates professionalism in Optometry and improves the industry standard in my opinion,” said Dr. Hoelscher. “As an individual, board certification emphasizes being current and well rounded in the field, which ultimately benefits patients.”
As a volunteer with ABO, Dr. Hoelscher has found the experience to be extremely rewarding. “It is an amazing process working with a great group of people having broadly different practice modalities, bringing their combined experience together to promote our profession,” she said. Dr. Hoelscher has a ton of respect for the other volunteers and their knowledge in all aspects of optometry. Contributing as an item writer and reviewer allows her to utilize her expertise for the advancement of board certification.
Currently in practice at Key-Whitman Eye Center in Dallas, Dr. Hoelscher specializes in pre- and post-operative care of all surgical patients, advanced dry eye treatment, glaucoma and diabetic eye care. She works in a group setting alongside other ODs and ophthalmologists, where there is also a study department that allows her to serve as a sub-investigator for many ongoing surgical and pharmaceutical studies. She is a member of the Texas Optometric Association and is a past president of the Dallas County Optometric Association.
Outside of her love for optometry and caring for patients, Dr. Hoelscher enjoys spending time with her two children, a son in college and a daughter in high school. When time allows, she also likes to travel, exercise, read and hang out with her two dogs.
We thank Dr. Hoelscher for her commitment to board certification and the countless volunteer hours she has spent on behalf of the American Board of Optometry and the profession.
