Diplomate Spotlight – Caryn LaBuda, OD

August 22, 2024

Meet Dr. Caryn LaBuda!

After graduating from the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Optometry in 2013, Dr. Caryn LaBuda completed a residency in primary care and ocular disease at Marion VA Medical Center in Marion, Illinois.

Currently she practices at Brenart Eye Clinic in Yorkville, Illinois, where she sees a wide variety of patients. She has been practicing for 11 years and recently started expanding into neuro-rehabilitation optometry. Dr. LaBuda enjoys volunteering through a group called RAM USA and tries to do at least 1-2 mission trips per year to Appalachia and other underserved communities.

Dr. LaBuda chose to become board certified because education is important to her and she feels that continuing to grow and learn is essential for the profession and patient care. She demonstrates this through her involvement in optometry. Not only is she an ABO Diplomate, Dr. LuBuda is also an American Academy of Optometry (AAO) Fellow; a Diplomate in the Comprehensive Eye Care Section of AAO; an Illinois Optometric Association (IOA) member; an American Optometric Association (AOA) member; and a Neuro-optometric Rehabilitation Association (NORA) member. And most recently, she has earned ABO Certificates of Added Qualification (CAQ) in BOTH Glaucoma and Cornea and Contact Lens! Earning her CAQs was important because she works hard to stay a well-rounded clinician and feels that the CAQs reflect this effort.

When asked her opinion on the impact board certification has had on optometry as a profession Dr. Labuda explained, “I think board certification has allowed our profession to continue to expand in a more medical direction, allowing us to be more recognized and more valued by other professions. Additionally, patients value board certification, as this is recognizable from other healthcare professions. Board certification has allowed me to do this in a meaningful way that reflects my modality of practice. Personally, this has allowed me to do more interprofessional communication and networking to take better care of my patients.”

In addition to her volunteer work with RAM USA, Dr. LaBuda enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, taking walks and simply being outdoors. She enjoys doing puzzles, reading murder mystery novels, and doing cross stitch or crochet.

Thank you Dr. LaBuda for all you do and for your support of ABO and board certification!
