A Word From Our Chair

January 29, 2026

As we begin a new year, it’s the perfect moment to reaffirm our collective commitment to elevating the profession of optometry—and one of the most meaningful ways to do that is by putting ABO board certification front and center. Whether through patient communications, practice websites, marketing materials, or everyday conversations, Diplomates play a critical role in helping patients, employers, and communities understand the value that board certification represents. When more ODs highlight their credential with pride, it reinforces a culture of excellence throughout the profession.

Supporting ABO doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Even small acts — such as volunteering, sharing your certification story with colleagues, or encouraging peers to pursue their own board certification — strengthens our community and broadens our impact. Engaging with ABO’s continuing education resources, from learning modules to webinars, also helps keep clinical skills sharp while contributing to a shared standard of lifelong learning. Every effort, no matter the size, helps expand the visibility and credibility of board certification in optometry.

This year, we’re excited to build on the insights gathered from our recent Diplomate survey and to introduce marketing tools designed specifically to help Diplomates share their board certification with patients, colleagues, employers, and referral networks. These resources will make it easier than ever to showcase the commitment, expertise, and professionalism that ABO certification represents. As awareness continues to grow, so will the strength of our Diplomate community—fueling momentum that benefits both optometry and the patients we serve.
