A Word from Our Chair

November 17, 2021

As the end of 2021 approaches, I wish to thank all Diplomates for your time and efforts invested in board certification through the ABO. Your commitment to lifelong learning and commitment to competency is reflected in the care of your patients and the growth and development of our chosen profession. Thank you!

I wish to also recognize the invaluable contributions from our state ambassadors who provide key communication resources at the state level on behalf of the ABO. Our ambassadors have been able to lobby state optometry boards enabling ABO Diplomates to claim CE credit for CAP assessments in 20 states. We are hopeful that this number will grow in 2022 through our ambassadors’ continued efforts. If your state optometry board still does not accept ABO CAP assessments, I would urge you to contact your board and encourage them to do so. You can also reach out to our staff at [email protected] for assistance with submitting an assessment to your state for approval.

At our annual meeting over the summer, the ABO Board of Directors identified a need for improved communication with other professional organizations in optometry. With this goal, the Board has identified these organizations and assigned key contacts to maintain open communications with them and identify areas of mutual interest for collaboration. ABO representatives have since met with the board of directors of the AOA, AAO, and ASCO to discuss shared concerns and opportunities. Our goal is to ultimately make ABO board certification even more relevant in optometry in the future.

Finally, I would encourage all Diplomates to view their Learning Builder Dashboard to ensure all maintenance of certification requirements and continuous assessments are up to date. If you have any questions, please, reach out to our Executive Director, April Wilhelm for assistance.

Thank you again to all Diplomates and support staff. I look forward to ABO realizing a productive and rewarding year in 2022.
