A Word from Our Chair

February 8, 2021
Paul Hodge, OD, FAAO

As we begin a new year, I would like to let our Diplomates and candidates know that the ABO Board of Directors (BOD) continues to be dedicated to our mission which is to advance the quality of eye care by promoting excellence through education, assessment, practice and professionalism, for the benefit of all patients. With this mission in mind, the BOD continues to evaluate our certification and maintenance of certification (MOC) programs and webinar offerings to ensure that they are engaging and provide continuous professional development throughout the year.

The ABO recently completed a Job Task Analysis (JTA) which is required of ABO every 5 years. We would like to thank those who participated in the recent Job Task Analysis survey and those who worked on the JTA committee to help develop the final analysis. This information is vital to the ABO as we develop and assess our ongoing program offerings and our five year strategic plan. This analysis, developed with your participation, will determine areas of emphasis for our upcoming certification examinations, CAP assessments and webinars.

The ABO has been working with our state ambassadors to encourage state optometric licensing boards to accept the Continuous Assessment Program (CAP) as continuing education for 3 hours per CAP assessment. We are now at 20 states who recognize these efforts and I would like to thank all of those individuals who have worked tirelessly on this endeavor to have this MOC requirement acknowledged as continuing education.

Please remember to take advantage of our free ABO webinar series. Our next webinar is COPE-approved and the topic is “Retinal OCT Interpretation” presented by Dr. Sowmya Srinivas. These webinars are offered quarterly to Diplomates and candidates free of charge.

Thank you all for your continued support of ABO and our mission to improve our profession through continuous life-long learning and professional development.
