A Word From Our Chair

The ABO Board of Directors and staff hope that everyone is safe and healthy as we all navigate the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic response across the country. We have been working diligently to increase the flexibility of our certification examination and maintenance of certification (MOC) programs during this time. We continue to listen to our Diplomates and Candidates and closely monitor the situation to ensure needs are being met.

Due to forced closures of many offices, some providers are finding themselves with more time to dedicate to completing their MOC requirements and CAP participation. Others, however, are working to rebuild student curriculums, assist residents who have been removed from clinical training and maintain private practices with reduced staff levels. Acknowledging a wide range of needs, ABO has reviewed our program requirements and made modifications to several areas to assist our Diplomates and Candidates during this pandemic.

The July testing window has been extended through August 31th. Candidates wishing to take the summer 2020 exam should apply and schedule their exam as soon as possible. Prometric testing centers will do their best to accommodate all ABO candidates who wish to test in July or August.

The due date for the current Posterior Segment CAP assessment has been extended until June 30th.  Our next CAP assessment, Anterior Segment II, will still be released on May 15th with a due date of August 31st. We have, however, released the references early so Diplomates can begin to review them while they may still have downtime. And for CE assistance, Diplomates and Candidates may now claim 2 hours of Category 2 MOC credit for ABO’s non-COPE webinars listed on our website.

And finally, as COVID-19 state closures have also impacted our members financially, ABO has waived all late fees for MOC dues until December 1, 2020.

I ask each Diplomate to please log in to the ABO website at americanboardofoptometry.org to review your current information and update your Learning Builder page with current CE information for your MOC cycle.  The website was recently updated and is now much easier to navigate and utilize.  I would like to thank ABO Executive Director April Wilhelm for her efforts in completing this redesign of our website.  The ABO board and staff work tirelessly to seek new and improved methods to meet our mission and we would like to thank our Diplomates for their continued support of our efforts.  Please feel free to reach out to any ABO director or our ED if you have any questions or would like to offer ideas on how we can better meet your needs.
